The Family Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave | Carmen Talk

What happens when the family stories we inherit are filled with missing chapters?

In this episode of Carmen Talk, Carmen reflects on growing up without knowing her biological father, untangling the “family bush,” and the lasting impact of parental secrets. After losing her mother at 11 and a half years old, Carmen was left with unanswered questions about her origins—a secret her mother intended to share at age 16, but never got the chance to tell.

Rather than looking back with bitterness, Carmen explores the crucial difference between protecting your children and protecting yourself. She offers a candid perspective on why parents default to secrecy, how hidden truths affect families, and why age-appropriate honesty is so vital.

In this episode:

  • The “Family Bush”: Why no family tree is perfectly neat and how every family navigates its own messiness.
  • Protecting Kids vs. Protecting Yourself: The real motives behind family secrets and how to shift from fear to honesty.
  • Finding Father Figures: Recognizing the positive male figures and mentors who step up along the way.
  • Leaving Intention, Not Chaos: Why making your intentions and truth known allows loved ones to grieve your absence, not your choices.

Whether you grew up with missing pieces in your family story or you’re a parent navigating tough conversations, this episode is a grounding reminder that you are worthy, loved, and filled with endless possibility.

Until Next Time,

Carmen Lezeth

  1. I never knew that I was a bastard until I learned from Ancestry.com that my mother and father were not married when I was born. Nor were they married when my two older brothers were born either! One of my older cousins told me that it was a Greek custom for the oldest child not to marry until a younger sibling married first. My parents married when I was one-year-old. I also learned the a biological grandfather from my mother’s side was placed into a New Jersey State Institution for the criminally insane when he tried to kill one of his daughters. Secrets like yours and mine seem to be kept in a lot of families.
