****** Summary Below******
We kicked things off with our weekly check‑in, and the East Coast was “suffering”. Rick is melting in 90‑degree Connecticut heat, Cynthia is battling Boston humidity, and everyone is counting down to the long holiday weekend. Carmen had nothing to add about the weather… except that the fires and air quality in California have been wrecking her throat all week.
Cynthia shared she’s going to be an auntie again, which brought some joy into her very long week — especially since her landlord still hasn’t turned on the AC. She said “A‑hole,” which led to a whole debate about whether saying “A‑hole” is actually any better than just saying the swear word.
Carmen talked about hurting her hamstring — not from running, just from walking, apparently — and Rick admitted the same thing happened to him. We dipped briefly into Carmen Talk and the episode about birthdays and aging, which sent us into a hilarious conversation about whether we’d ever want to go back and be younger. Rick said yes, but only if he could take all his current knowledge with him. Carmen said absolutely not; she wants to see how it all ends.
Rick swore “Dag‑Nabbit,” which deserves its own highlight reel.
Then we asked the big question: What would we do if we won the lottery? Carmen would give it all away. Rick said no one would ever know because he’d keep his green screen up and stay quiet. The man has a plan.
We touched on Culture & Consequence and Carmen’s thoughts on billionaires — specifically why she hates all of them now. But we quickly pivoted back to joy. Rob Base passed away, and Carmen sang “Joy & Pain,” which felt right. We also congratulated Stephen Colbert on his final show and encouraged everyone to watch it.
Our main topic of the night: What makes a TV show great? And what makes a TV show bad? Cynthia said writing and chemistry. Rick said he has to care about the characters. We talked about pilots, finales, how many episodes we give a show before quitting, and why connection matters more than genre. Carmen admitted she only watched 911 because she loves Angela Bassett.
We debated finales — Big Bang Theory (great), Game of Thrones (absolutely not). Carmen praised The West Wing as one of the best shows ever made. We talked about movie trailers and how they’ve become terrible, giving away too much and making us want to see the movie less, not more.
We dove into famous spin‑offs — Golden Girls, Maude, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Cheers, Frasier — and gave love to Norman Lear.
We asked whether people prefer comfort shows or challenging shows. Carmen introduced her term “Bubble Gum TV,” which she insists is hers and hers alone, even though Trevor Noah and AOC apparently stole it. Bubble Gum TV: shows that wrap up nicely, feel good, and go down easy.
Rick shocked us by admitting he’s never watched The Big Bang Theory.
We talked about writing, directing, and what it’s actually like on set. Carmen explained why the director is the final word, how collaborative the process is, and why memorizing lines is the easiest part of acting. Rick shared how strict the dialogue was on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Carmen broke down why knowing your lines perfectly frees you to actually act.
We wrapped with a conversation about editors, writers, and why both Cynthia and Rick need to visit a set someday. They agreed. And honestly, we’d love to see it.
If this episode brought you a little joy, consider liking, subscribing, or sharing it with someone who might need it.
As always, remember — it really is All About The Joy.
Until next time,
Carmen
