Holding Onto The Good Stuff – Week 1

I was writing in my journal this morning and I found myself struggling to come up with five good things that happened this week. I can easily rattle off ten things that happened badly this week, but why is it so hard to remember the good stuff?

What. Is. That. About? Is it just easier to hold onto negative things because we deal with them intensely, try to fix them, and move on from them? Or are we just taking the good things that happen to us for granted? For me, I’m sure it’s the latter.

It took me a while, but I finally did it – here are five good things that happened last week:

1. I spoke to my “brother-from-another-mother” Billy on the phone early Thursday morning and we got caught up. Most importantly, we laughed so hard. I love when Billy and I talk because I always end up with that deep-in-your-belly kind of laughter…

2. I was working out and had my headset on. Randomly this song, not in any of my playlists, came on. It’s the exact version from my favorite movie, and it stopped me in my tracks. I hadn’t heard it in years. Although I’m not very religious, this is what I needed to hear. I teared up a bit just remembering that as I’m writing this piece… Here’s the lovely song I heard (a great scene in the movie too):

3. I found an old favorite t-shirt of mine in the closet.  Not sure how it got there, I don’t put T-shirts in my closet, but there it was.  I hadn’t seen it in a long while. Didn’t realize it was missing if I’m being honest.  I wore it to sleep last night (I still have it on as I’m writing this).  It has the word, “LOVE” written across it. Makes me smile because I know who gave it to me…

4. I slept for 8 hours Friday night. I was exhausted – I laid on my bed for what I thought would be a quick 20-minute nap and instead, I slept through the night. I swear I woke up in the same exact position I started. Dead tired. I felt so good when I woke up… I’m lucky most days if I get 5 hours of sleep. 8 Hours is definitely better!

5. And probably my favorite moment of the week was getting this cool bracelet from Kasey. She’s Jo’s kid, Jo-Ann, being one of my dearest and oldest friends, who has three incredibly beautiful kids. And Kasey is just one of the coolest people on the planet. They’re making bracelets to help offset the cost of Kasey’s upcoming trip for Nationals in July!! She’s one of New Hampshire’s Ms. Amazing!  I’m so proud of her!  And I clearly love, love, love my new bracelet!

Wow. That took me way too long to figure out. The good stuff. I think I’m going to make it a part of my day now. Before I go to bed, I’m going to think about one good thing that happened that day. Doesn’t matter how small, or how inconsequential it may be, but I’m going to try and hold onto the good stuff much longer. And maybe, by doing that, I can start learning to let go of that bad stuff just as easily? It’s worth a shot.

As always, thanks for stopping by.

  1. It may take a while to come up with some good things, or things that I classify as wanting to be “grateful” for.
Kind of like me wanting to write about Bobby Darin sometime this year to mark the 50th anniversary of his death in the month of December. For some reason only known to the Universe, I decided to find out what his birthday was. Lo and behold, I Googled his name it on May 13, just one day before his actual birthday. And then I started writing!

That wasn’t just a coincidence. It was a good thing manifesting right before my eyes.

Carl G Jung would say it was “synchronicity” with the powers from somewhere beyond our regular understanding to figure out how our subconscious mind that’s connected to so many others functions on our behalf without our even knowing about it.
It may take a while to figure out the “good” and the unusual occurrence that suddenly pops up but if we seek answers we will find more good than bad.
